wisdom at work - lifting leadership to the next level

Wisdom at Work - Overview
A seminar with Noel Posus and Claire Stretch
Sydney 26th June 2008

Wisdom is core to successful leadership (as well as self-governance) and could be described as being the integration of knowledge with experience and intuition.

Unlike knowledge, wisdom can't be gained from a book or other external source, as its very nature is that it is inherent inside each individual. It must be drawn out from within and actively applied to the situations and challenges that are a part of our daily lives.

  • Do you wish you knew the wise thing to do, whatever the situation,
in order to make the most of it for yourself and for others?
  • Would you like to be a wiser leader of your team, your business,
    your community, or other group?
  • Would you like more wisdom in your self-leadership style?

If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then this seminar will be of service to you.

Clarifying the above definition and increasing your capacity to draw out and apply your wisdom will form the core of the Wisdom at Work seminar.

Learning from the past and present to improve the future

Samuel Smiles (a notable English journalist, writer and industrialist of the 19th century) said:
'We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what will do, by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery.'

Does this have a ring of truth about it for you? It almost certainly would have for many of today's respected, innovative and successful business leaders such as Hiroshi Okuda (Toyota), Michael Dell (Dell Computer), Steve Jobs (Apple) and Jack Welch (GE). We can be sure they all had to try various leadership strategies and options before coming up with the successful models they now captain.

Then we have historic figures of wisdom and leadership such as Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci and Thomas Edison to name a (somewhat random!) few. Edison, the U.S. inventor, personally held 1,093 US patents by the end of his life.

We can be sure that Edison had many ideas that didn't make it through to successful production; however, he used each failure to add to his wisdom, so paving the way for eventual success. Without his wisdom and leadership skills it might have been far longer before the light bulb became viable (he took its life span from minutes to hours) and affordable by the general population, due to his development of mass production techniques.

And it would seem an oversight not to mention two of the wisest nation leaders of modern time - Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Ghandi. The latter of whom famously said 'Be the change you wish to see in the world', pointing to the all-important role of modelling in wise leadership.

There are many such examples of leaders and innovators whose success and modus operandi could be put down to their wisdom - that is, the unique way in which they integrate knowledge with their own experience and intuition. They do not, however, have a monopoly on wisdom; it is something that all of us by definition have as human beings, and it is unique in each of us.

So we encourage you to join us to tap into your own rich inner resource of wisdom, as well as seeing how that process works in other people, in order to bring this part of yourself into your daily life and interactions and so make your wisdom work for you in tangible ways.

In this seminar we will address the above questions and others, including:

  • What is wisdom and what does it mean to you?
  • How can you access and appreciate your own wisdom more easily and more fully?
  • What makes a wise leader?
  • How can you be a wiser leader and make wisdom an inherent aspect of your leadership style?
  • What does it take to connect with and draw out the wisdom of others?
  • How can you put wisdom to work for you in everyday life both professionally and personally?

Outcomes - you will have:

  • Developed a personal and professional definition of wisdom
  • Developed a personal and professional wisdom-based model of leadership
  • Clarity about how to apply wisdom in numerous contexts
  • The ability to access and act on your wisdom voice rather than less useful internal voices e.g. the controller, victim or sceptic
  • Developed strategies for eliciting wisdom within your team and other groups
  • A development action plan
  • Access to an on-line resource library of wisdom and leadership focused materials
  • The opportunity to pursue this material further through individual coaching.
